T. Boone Pickens says the future of America is in wind power
CHICAGO -- The oil crisis in America is real and it's here to stay. That's the bottom line, according to T. Boone Pickens, one of the world's wealthiest oil men.
T. Boone Pickens, oil tycoon: "We look like fools, without a plan...is the way we've been operating for 40 years."
In an interview with Good Morning America's Chris Cuomo, Pickens blames a lack of national leadership, and planning, for letting prices get so high:
Pickens: "I'm not saying anybody lied to them, but they've been led to believe the price of gasoline will come down."
He also says the President's plea to OPEC, to pump more, is pointless.
Pickens: "That's a joke. OPEC's producing all it can produce. They're just stringing you along."
So what does Pickens say will work? He recommends a two-part plan: natural gas, in the short term...and wind energy, in the long term.
Pickens: "I think that's the future of this country."
And pickens is putting his money where his mouth is...when it comes to wind.
Pickens: "We're building a 4,000-megawatt wind farm in Pampa, Texas."
He says, by relying more on wind to power our homes, we can redirect natural gas for use in planes, trains, trucks and cars...reducing our dependency on foreign oil. It's a plan he says has to happen soon...because when it comes to oil, time is money.
Pickens: "We are in an emergency. There's no question about it. And so, something has to be done about it."
Diana Alvear, reporting: "Pickens says gas could be as high as 6 dollars a gallon, this time next year. But, he also believes we'll be better equipped to deal with it...now that everyone's finally taking this crisis seriously."
